Instructions

  • Day of your tattoo: Purchase a tube of A+D Original ointment, or Aquaphor Healing Ointment. If Saniderm is applied- leave on for 4 hours. (If you receive your tattoo in the evening, it is okay to leave it on overnight.) When you remove the saniderm, thoroughly wash your tattoo with mild soap and water, such as Dial Antibacterial Soap. Pat the tattoo with a clean, dry towel, and apply a VERY THIN layer of ointment. (Please Note: It is normal for there to be a small amount of color/ ink residue when you remove the plastic.)

  • Day 1-4: During the first 3-4 days it is important to wash your tattoo and reapply ointment every 2-4 hours. When washing, use a mild soap and warm water. Scrub the tattoo with your bare clean hand, palms open. Pat dry the area with a clean dry towel, and apply a VERY THIN layer of ointment each time. Keep your tattoo out of the sun as much as possible. Do not use tanning beds during the healing process.

  • Day 5-7: After the first 4 days, you no longer need to wash the tattoo. Avoid letting water run directly on your tattoo when showering. Apply a VERY THIN layer of ointment about 4-5 times a day, or whenever the tattoo seems dry. It is normal for thin flakes of color to be coming off at this stage. Allow them to do this naturally. DO NOT PICK AT YOUR SCABS IF YOU HAVE THEM.

  • Day 8-14: At this point, continue to use VERY THIN layers of your ointment, or switch to a fragrance free lotion as needed. Keep the tattoo from getting wet. Do not take baths or soak in a hot tub. After showering, pat dry the tattoo, do not rub it with a towel. It is normal for a tattoo to be itchy at this stage. Try not to scratch it or wear tight or restrictive clothing that may rub on your tattoo.

  • Day 15- Life of the tattoo: Continue using the lotion or ointment as needed when your tattoo looks dry. It will have a shiny appearance for a few weeks until it is completely healed. For the life of your tattoo, you should always put sunscreen on in order to protect your color from the sun. If you want the tattoo to stay as bright as possible, continue to keep the area of the tattoo shaved.
