Tattooing is an age-old art form that has seen countless innovations over the years. One of the critical aspects of tattooing is aftercare, which ensures the longevity and vibrancy of the artwork. While traditional aftercare methods often included petroleum-based products, modern research and some of my experiences have highlighted several reasons that I have changed my process and aftercare. I'm so excited to share what I've learned in Dallas!
I don't even use Aquaphor or Vaseline when I tattoo. I exclusively use Inkeeze now. I have used this before, but it is consistent now.
What Are Petroleum-Based Products?
Petroleum-based products, such as Aquaphor, A+D, Neosporin, Vaseline and other petrolatum-based ointments, are derived from crude oil. They have been widely used for their moisturizing properties and ability to create a protective barrier on the skin.
1. Interference with Healing
Petroleum-based products form a thick barrier on the skin, which can trap heat and moisture. While this may seem beneficial, but it can actually hinder the skin’s natural healing process. Tattoos need to breathe to heal properly, and a petroleum layer can prevent this, leading to prolonged healing times and potential complications like infection.
2. Clogging Pores
One of the primary issues with petroleum-based products is their occlusive nature. They are known to clog pores, which can lead to acne breakouts and other skin irritations. For a fresh tattoo, which is essentially an open wound, clogged pores can result in inflammation and infection, compromising the tattoo's appearance and health.
3. Allergic Reactions and Irritations
Some individuals may have or develop allergic reactions to petroleum-based products. Symptoms can include redness, itching, and swelling, which are particularly detrimental during the tattoo healing process. Natural alternatives often have a lower risk of causing such reactions.
4. Impact on Tattoo Quality
The thick consistency of petroleum-based products can cause the ink to bleed and spread, distorting the design. This phenomenon, known as "ink migration," can lead to blurry lines and a loss of detail in the tattoo. For tattoo artists and clients alike, maintaining the integrity of the artwork is super important.
5. Environmental Concerns
Beyond personal health, the use of petroleum-based products raises environmental issues. The production and disposal of petroleum products contribute to pollution and reliance on non-renewable resources. Choosing eco-friendly, plant-based alternatives helps reduce this environmental footprint.
Alternative Products for Tattoo Aftercare
Given the drawbacks of petroleum-based products, several alternatives are recommended for tattoo aftercare:
While petroleum-based products have long been a staple in tattoo aftercare, their drawbacks are increasingly prompting everyone to seek alternatives. I keep investing and learning, because tattooing has come such a long way- and has so much to offer! By opting for more natural and skin-friendly products, you can ensure your tattoo heals beautifully and remains a stunning piece of art for years to come!
